Jelly but no Ice Cream

An amazing sight in Cheshire today, something that I'd never heard of before but now I've seen it just 3 miles from home - a Freshwater Jellyfish!! Imported, possibly on aquatic plants from abroad the Freshwater Jellyfish ( Craspedacusta sowerbii ) has colonised a few sites in the UK. It lays dormant, possibly for years, only being seen in warm weather, which it undoubtably is at the moment in the current heatwave. Hundreds were seen in the Shropshire Union Canal near Middlewich this morning, seemingly doing no harm to any native animals or plants. The jellyfish are only 2cm in diameter when fully grown and are a fascinating addition to the UKs fauna. A picture can be seen here, taken this morning.
