Review of Swarovski 115m scope
The first impression of the scope is of course the large front lens, which certainly attracts the attention of other birders.
- up on the tripod (Manfrotto MVH500AH head) was fine. If you require perfect balance, then it would be better to position the scope towards the rear of the head, to counter the weight of the glass. I used to do this previously with my 95mm Swarovski, but most people would not bother.
Once set up on your tripod all this is quickly forgotten.
The location for the performance and comparison check was looking across the Ribble Estuary at Marshside, Southport on a dull cloudy day. This area really does test a scope as most birds are at very long range.
The scope could only be compared to a Swarovski 85mm using a straight-through body. The 115mm scope body was angled and therefore should lose a very small amount of light compared to a straight body.
We checked the performance by looking at a distant Merlin. We were immediately struck by the far brighter image of the 115mm. This enabled us to focus more quickly and accurately on the bird.
In addition, the large object lens allowed us to turn the magnification up higher than the 85mm whilst keeping a brighter image.
We tried Digi-scoping using an iPhone and found that the image was better through the 115mm. The 85mm in the low light proved difficult to decide when you were in focus.
The resulting image of the Merlin on the iPhone was sharper but this may be yet again because the focusing was easier and thus clearer, rather than better optical performance.
This could only be defined if we used test charts to test both scopes.
J Hall.
